People doing their homework on auto insurance find that there are two keys to finding the best price. The first key is the insurance company. Rates vary significantly from one insurer to the next, according to Michael Bailey at the Insurance Plus Agencies of Houston. The second key is utilizing all the discounts that are available.

Bailey suggests calling a few different agents to compare companies and quotes. "Let the agent know that you are shopping around," said Bailey on the Homework Houston radio show. "Plus play a little hard to get." That way the agent will typically work a little harder to find the best company and the best rate.

"Plan to spend a few minutes on the phone and ask a few questions," said Bailey. You want to make sure you're getting an accurate quote and not just a low rate to get you in the door. Bailey suggests planning on 10 to 15 minutes talking with the agent to give the agent enough information on your current circumstances. That will give you enough time to ask questions about how the quote was prepared, what company is providing the insurance and what kind of coverage is proposed.

Independent insurance agents have a distinct advantage, according to Michael Bailey. Independent agents can apply the customers circumstances to the company with the most favorable rates and the best discounts available.

Common discounts include lower rates for people in their mid 40's, married, have had prior insurance, have a good credit score, completed higher education and live in rural zip codes where traffic accidents are less frequent. "These discounts don’t apply to all companies," warns Bailey. "Every company is different. Let your agent know what your current circumstances are and ask them what other discounts may be available. You want to know all the discounts you're eligible for."
